For this test, you need two basic instruments. 1) A tape measure to measure the hole. 2) A Shovel to dig the hole. A perc test is handy to give your customers an idea of the types of flowers, plants, shrubs, and trees to install into their beds and other landscaping areas. Dig a hole 1′ deep x 1′ in diameter. Fill the hole with water and wait for the water to completely drain from the hole. Then, fill the hole with water again and start your stopwatch. Our example flower bed is in an area of Tennessee where a good drainage time for a 1′ deep x 1′ diameter hole filled with water is considered to be 3 hours. Drainage time of more than three hours is considered longer than average. Plants in this type landscape need the ability to thrive in very moist soil. Plan Drainage time of less than three hours is considered slower than average. Plants in this type landscape need the ability to thrive in dry soil. If your soil test show your ground is not condusive to the types of plants you desire you have two options. 1) Amend the soil to give a better perc rate. If your drainage is too slow, you can add a drainage system such as a crushed gravel subsurface layer or perforated corregated piping several inches below planting depth slanted to drain away water. Or, you can amend the soil. 2) If your perc rate is too quick, you can try container gardening …

You would think by the title of this article, the story below would be so simple you didnt even have to read it but that is certainly not the case. Most lawn care business owners dont put much time into where their phone number should appear. Just ask yourself where does your phone number appear? One of our forum members had some great information to share in this post at the Gopher Lawn Care Business Forum. He said You want your phone number PROMINENTLY displayed. You want to make sure you edit your html meta tag description to include your phone number first so your search engine listing will display your lawn care business like this. http – 111-222-3333 Joes lawn care blah blah blah blah blah lawn care in Your City blah blah blah blah blah . For those that dont know, I asked him what is the importance of having your phone number in that location? Why is it so important? He responded by saying Lets say you lawn care services in Somewhere, Arkansas. Your would want to make your web TITLE to read Somewhere Arkansas Lawn Care Service Your DESCRIPTION would be (assuming this is your website name): www.SomewhereLawnCare.com 111-222-3333 Somewhere Arkansas lawn care? We are the lawn service leaders in Somewhere Arkansas. We specialize in landscaping, lawn care, landscape lighting and sprinkler systems in the Somewhere Arkansas area. The phone number will show up in the link desciption on …

My latest book The landscaping and lawn care business plan startup guide is now available. You can order it along with my other lawn care business books here. gopherforum.com Lawn care business owners are always looking for a way to keep their name and phone number in front of potential customers. Here is an idea to make sure you stick around. Why not get some magnets. But not just any old magnet, how about one that pays for itself and could even make you a profit. Here is what you can do. Get a list of local important numbers in the area. Town numbers like the mayor, police, library, water and sewer dept. You can find most of these on your towns websites. Then list other numbers like local pizzerias, sub shops, and others. Maybe get a local electrician, plumber, carpenter, roofer etc. They could potentially help you buy some of these magnets and hand them out themselves as well, to help offset the costs. Then have a section for lawn care and list only your phone number. Stick these on doors in your area and be sure that your number will stick around for quite some time. You could also have different discounts for services through out the year. One of our forum members’ Rob had such an easy time selling them. Why? Because he knew most of the people he was presenting the idea too and they trusted him. gopherforum.com lawnchat.com This is a great lesson in how the more people you know, the more you can …

www.StartALawnCareBusiness.com Today we are talking about how to properly prune a limb off a tree. In today’s example, we have a branch that has been damaged. The bark is peeling away from the subwood. The entire limb is dead and needs to be pruned off to maintain the health of the tree. This limb is joined at a collared union. The bark of the tree poofs out as the limb come out of the tree. The poofed out part is the collar. All cuts at a collared union should be on the branch side of the collar. You should never cut into the collar of a tree. Cutting into a collar can do severe damage to the tree. If this branch were smaller, we could use a pair of anvil loppers to prune away the branch. Since it is so large, our anvils will not produce a correct cut. For this branch we are going to use a bow saw. A pruning saw will work too. The proper method of cutting a branch with a saw is to use the three-cut method of pruning. If you just use the saw and cut it at the collar, the weight of the branch will pull down and you risk tearing the collar damaging the tree. We are going to use the three-cut method. The first cut is made on the underside of the branch about 5 inches away from the collar. Cut the branch about 1 way through. The second cut is made about 2 inches further away from the collar than the underside cut. As you can see in the video, while making the top cut the branch fell downward before the cut was complete. This action tore the underside of the branch to the …
